Barry Whitlow trained in London, gaining the Kate Charles prize and a distinction in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of London in 1992.
While he completed his specialised training as a consultant in 2003 in all aspects of General Gynaecology, he has concentrated his focus on pelvic pain and endometriosis.
He was the first consultant in UK to obtain an advanced diploma Gynae endoscopy 2007.
He feels that dedicated practice in pelvic pain and endometriosis allows enhanced detection of subtle endometriosis inscans and surgery, that can otherwise be overlooked, especially in younger and perimenopausal patients.
He set up the Colchester pelvic pain and endometriosis centre in 2008 - which is a BSGE nationally accredited centre.
He has since appointed two more consultant colleagues and together, the Colchester Endometriosis centre has been the second busiest accredited unit in the country for the last 2 years running (2025-2026), attracting referrals from other consultants from all over the country.
He operates on complex NHS laparoscopies at Colchester Hospital (avg 150 cases / year) and private complex laparoscopies (at Colchester and Oaks Hospitals avg 120 cases / year). His patient feedback is in the top decile of his peers, and has trained over 300 specialists since 2003.
